Tornadoes

Tornadoes are powerful storms that can form during severe weather conditions, particularly in spring and summer. They begin as a rotating column of air that extends from a thunderstorm down to the ground. Tornadoes can be very fast and spin with incredible force, sometimes reaching speeds of over 300 miles per hour! They can vary in size and strength, with some being small and weak while others are large and extremely destructive.

When a tornado touches down, it can cause significant damage to buildings, trees, and anything else in its path. The winds can pick up heavy objects and toss them around like they are light as a feather. This is why it is very important for people living in areas where tornadoes occur to be prepared. Many communities have warning systems to alert residents of an approaching tornado, and people are encouraged to have a safety plan, including a safe place to go, like a basement or an interior room away from windows.

Tornadoes are measured using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which rates their strength from EF0 (weakest) to EF5 (strongest). Scientists study tornadoes to understand how they form and how to predict when they might happen. While they can be scary, knowing about them and having a plan can help keep people safe. It’s essential to listen to weather updates and follow safety instructions during severe weather to stay protected.
